Retrofitting heat pumps and heat pump grants
Is my house suitable for a retrofit heat pump?
Air to water heat pumps work very efficiently at a low constant temperature to heat your house and hot water. As they work at lower temperatures than oil, gas or solid fuel heating systems the level of installation in your home becomes very important. We work closely with approved SEAI assessors who will visit your home, assess it for suitability to run a heat pump system. If your home is not deemed suitable, they will advise you on what level of insulation upgrades your home requires – this may include, cavity wall insulation, external insulation, internal drylining, attic and roofing insulation, upgrade or replacement of windows and doors. Once your house has been assessed and deemed suitable for the heat pump system, you will be eligible for a grant of €6,750. We will guide you along the process of the assessment, design and installation of your system.
How much does a typical heat pump installation cost?
This will depend on the size of the house, the type and condition of the current heating system but the average costs are between €9,000 – €15,000. Regardless of the cost, you will be entitled to the grant of €6,750 to put towards the cost.
Will a heat pump work alongside my current radiators?
We carry out a detailed inspection of your current heating system and decide if a chemical power flush would be sufficient to enable your radiators to work with the heat pump. The suitability of your radiators for this treatment will depend on the condition and efficiency of the radiators. If this treatment is not suitable, we can supply and install a range of new radiator options.
Will I have to dig up or remove floors to install a heat pump system?
No. We will install the system with minimal disruption by connecting the heat pump to your existing system without the need to disturb floors.
Does the heat pump have to run 24 hours a day?
No. This a common misconception about air to water heat pumps. We will incorporate zoning of your heating system using different thermostatic options therefore the heat pump will heat your house to your desired temperature and will turn off until your house requires heat again.
Will my heat pump provide hot water?
Yes. You will have a constant supply of hot water. We tailor your system to suit your needs based on the number of occupants and bathrooms in the home.
Is there a lot of maintenance with a heat pump system?
There would be typically less maintenance with a heat pump than with a gas or oil boiler system. We would recommend an annual service to clean filters and the system and check that all is in working order.
Is an air to water heat pump system expensive to run?
An air to water heat pump system runs on electricity. Recent hikes in electricity prices have certainly increased the running costs of a heat pump. However, when compared to an oil/ gas or solid fuel heating system, an air to water heat pump provides more comfort and efficiency when installed and controlled properly.
This will depend on the level of work your bathroom requires. For example, for a full bathroom refurbishment we would come
